Junji Ito Halloween Inspired Cosplay With Isaac

In this new cosplay article, I will tell you all about our mother and son Halloween Junji Ito costumes this Halloween.

Junji Ito Halloween Inspired Cosplay With Isaac

The Idea

The idea we were going for drew inspiration from the eerie and iconic characters of Junji Ito's horror manga, particularly Soichi and Tomie. We were styling Isaac after Soichi, a creepy, mischievous character known for his unsettling expressions, mouth stitched with nails, and candle "horns" wrapped in bandages. This styling captured Soichi's haunting look, blending innocence with a disturbing twist.

The idea for the main shot was to stand behind Isaac as Tomie, a beautiful yet sinister character known for her ability to manipulate and haunt those around her. Together, our poses and styling create a chilling aesthetic that reflects the horror and psychological tension in Ito's work. The idea and image we created combine horror with a sense of artistry, highlighting the beauty and unease of these characters' contrasting personalities: Soichi's chaotic darkness and Tomie's seductive malevolence.

Tomie

Wanting to do a Tomie look for quite a while, I finally had my chance this Halloween when Isaac wanted to do our matching costumes. We had an epiphany to do something we both were into and get the opportunity to get creative and make this mother-and-son masterpiece. The Tomie look I went for was from the game Identity V. One of the hunter's skins you can get in the game is the dream witch Tomie's skin. I decided to do this version not only because I love Tomie but also because I love playing the mobile game.

Soichi

Isaacs's favourite Character from Junji Ito is Soichi; he loves how strange and his childlike nature makes Isaac laugh so much. Even though it is seen as a horror, he just is fascinated by his manner, Character, and overall look. It's fitting as he is a schoolboy, and at this age, most people consider his sense of humour annoying. However, this is the opposite of Isaac's, so it was a good way for him to express himself as someone else and showcase his modelling abilities.

Props

Using a prop to top off a cosplay costume can give you some extra skill points. For this, Isaac used his Soichi manga book. Showing his costume and the Character he is dressed up with was an excellent way to showcase how spot-on he looked for this Halloween Junji Ito aesthetic.

Mother & Son Halloween Costumes

Usually, I always pull a creative costume out of the bag for Isaac on Halloween. However, he kept asking me to dress up with him this year. So we came up with dressing up as something we both enjoy and for it to be creepy. Just the two of us, as mother and son, this Halloween, and to be creative together for our favourite holiday. The images we captured of this creative Halloween moment showed a mother and son Halloween aesthetic, dressed in matching costumes inspired by the characters we love from Junji Ito's horror manga universe.

Isaac embodies Soichi, with his unsettling grin held together by pins and bandages, complete with his lit candle "horns" for an extra spine-chilling effect. Together, we bring Junji Ito's chilling artwork to life, showing our shared love for the macabre and imaginative horror. Our creative mother-and-son duo captures the essence of Junji Ito's horror characters, Tomie and Soichi, for this Halloween. Our costumes highlight impressive attention to detail and a shared love for Ito's horror aesthetics. They combine eerie authenticity with a touch of family bonding over horror manga.

Who Is Junji Ito?

Junji Ito is a renowned Japanese horror manga artist celebrated for his uniquely disturbing and surreal art style, which explores the depths of psychological terror and grotesque beauty. His work often delves into themes of existential dread, body horror, and the uncanny, creating nightmarish stories that unsettle readers on a visceral level. Among his most famous works are Uzumaki, a story about a town cursed by spirals, and Tomie, which follows an immortal girl who drives people to madness. Ito's influence spans horror, anime, and popular culture, earning him a global fan base and a reputation as a master of modern horror.

Isaac's Makeup

The makeup we did for Isaacs Soichi looks from Junji Ito's horror manga. Exaggerating the thick black lines surrounding his eyes and sharpened lines around Isaacs's mouth shows Soichi's unsettling, sinister smiling expression used in the manga. The stitched mouth details I used with the dark makeup lines and nails mirror Soichi's affinity for mischief and dark magic, adding an eerie aspect to this overall makeup look. Adding long candles as "horns" gives a haunted, otherworldly vibe that channels Soichi's bizarre and macabre style. Our makeup was a complete success, transforming Isaac into Ito's disturbing Character. This evokes both fear and fascination for fans of this horror manga. He pulled off the creepy aesthetic that Socichi gives off and captivated the poses so well.

My Makeup

My makeup in this photo is hauntingly yet elegant, focusing on bold, dark accents that give a sinister yet alluring appearance. My eyeliner is sharply winged, creating a dramatic frame for my eyes, while subtle blood-like streaks descend from the outer corners, adding a macabre touch. My lips are painted in soft, neutral shades, balancing the overall intensity. The makeup, black attire, and dark bangs give off a mysterious, otherworldly aura reminiscent of Tomie, a character from Junji Ito's horror manga known for her eerie beauty and unsettling presence. This style blends horror with an unnerving grace. Her makeup and outfit evoke Tomie's unsettling allure, adding an element of dark elegance. I tried to capture all of this in creating my Tomie costume.

Overall

I absolutely adored doing this with Isaac. It made me so proud that he is not only a horror fan but also an anime fan! He did so well, from natural posing to helping me out with the whole look and costumes we created.
