La Dragon Restaurant Review

An excellent taste of Asia right in the heart of Kilmarnock. Let me tell you about the wonderful food and experience I had at La Dragon.

La Dragon Restaurant Review

La Dragon

The restaurant used to be an old pub in Kilmarnock town called the Cellar, to my surprise and with great anticipation I heard that the building was going to be opened up as a new Asian-inspired restaurant. Loving everything that is Asian and a massive fan of Japanese culture I was glad to hear of their opening! The restaurant itself is very spacious yet gives off a close warm vibe, with lovely attentive staff and management, you will feel 100% welcome for an enjoyable evening.

Champagne Bar

The bar itself is open until 2 a.m.! So donโ€™t worry about rushing out to get home, stay and have โ€œjust one more drinkโ€ with La Dragon. A lovely chilled-out environment to unwind on the weekend with friends and family, or a romantic evening out. This zen space is so relaxing and a stone's throw away from the bar so you'll always have a nice cocktail or your favourite drink in hand when spending time in this exquisite room. Decorated to bring you close and clink your glasses to a wonderful night out on the town, La Dragon's Asian champagne bar will leave you feeling relaxed like never before. An atmosphere you will want to come back to and experience again.

Drinks/ Cocktails

The drinks menu is quite large, with multiple great items to choose from. Take some time to make your choice and why not even try something special from La Dragons cocktail section? The presentation of their drinks is set to a wonderful standard. One thing I will say is to make sure you have a napkin at hand due to the glasses being so cold with the added ice, and the water seeps down the glass to the bottom making it drip when lifted.

What Drinks We Had

HONG KONG COLADA

Ingredients are:
Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum, Lychee Juice & Liqueur,
Coconut Milk, Sugar, Coco Syrup

DAIQUIRI
Rum, Strawberry / Peach / Passion Fruit /
Bubblegum Liqueur,
Sugar Syrup, Lime Juice

We ordered a Hong Kong colada. This was so fun!! I definitely would recommend this drink to everyone going to La Dragon, especially those pina colada lovers! For the next drink, I ordered a Bubblegum Daiquiri - Holy nostalgia! This bubblegum phenomenon had me living my childhood memories blowing those big bubbles. This can be ordered as a Strawberry, Peach, Passion Fruit, or Bubblegum option. So why not try a few out and see what is your favourite?

The menu

An exceptional menu and variety is certainly something I look for when choosing from any restaurant, there were so many great options in each section of the menu. take your time in deciding, there's no rush, and maybe try something new. Adam and I browsed for a while over this menu to see what we had been offered and came to the decision that we would try some dishes we hadn't tried before, to see how this experience would pan out in La Dragon.

What We Ate

My starter:

Panfried Dumpling

Chicken and Vegetables wrapped in a light dough.

Starting off with these chicken dumplings was a great choice. I've always been a fan of Asian dumplings, so I was excited to try La Dragons' take on them, as well as their homemade chilli sauce. I couldn't have picked better! The dumplings were great, and a small taste of Asia. I shared these with Adam, and he enjoyed them as well and was something different from his usual choices.

My Main:

Thai Spiced Lemon Fish & Mussels

Pan-fried Halibut or King Prawn served with fresh, local mussels in a delicately fragranced Thai lemon sauce, with a serving of rice or French fries.

There was so much to choose from that sounded delicious, after reading through their wonderful menu I settled on the halibut, and wow was I impressed with this dish. Adam even was sneaking his chips into my Thai sauce, he liked it that much too! I have loved mussels since I was a child so I knew that this main course was one for me to try out. There was so much to this meal, such as mushrooms, mussels, halibut, baby corn, and peppers. I mean, I'm not complaining I absolutely adored this Thai meal, I would order it again for sure.

Adams Starter:

Stornoway Black Pudding & Tempura

Award-winning Black Pudding with chicken tempura served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce.

I did have a taste of Adams starter and I must say prefer the chicken to the black pudding. Not that it wasn't cooked perfectly, it's just my personal preference.

Admas Main:

Black Pepper & Dark Chocolate Chicken

Pan-fried breast of chicken in a creamy black pepper & chocolate sauce. Served with seasonal vegetables & rice or French fries.

Adam was so curious about this dish, as he had heard other restaurants had made it, so without hesitation, he ordered it! I was curious myself, so Adam offered me a piece to try, so I could make an assessment of this unusual dish for myself.ย  After sampling a taste of this strange meal, it was not for me. I guess it's an acquired taste, maybe you should try for yourself to make up your mind about it?

Desserts

Peach Melba Sundaeย

Peaches, crushed meringue, and ice cream served with a strawberry coulis.

This was so rich in flavour, a burst of peach with every bite. With so many good options for dessert, we decided it would be romantic to get a nice sundae together to share. This peach melba sundae was the perfect way to end such a lovely meal for two.

Cost

Are you looking for a great experience? A romantic meal for two? Look no further than La Dragon based in the town of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire - you get your money's worth. Sometimes a nice restaurant can be a little pricey, depending on the decor and standards of food along with hygiene and atmosphere these are all things you are essentially paying for with a nice evening out. So if a restaurant ticks all those boxes, they are worth paying that little extra for a great experience. La Dragon certainly has all of these qualities, making it easy to pay a little more for such a great experience.

Bathrooms

One thing for me is that I do not like using public restrooms. I have major OCD and germs just freak me out! So I always scope out a restroom in restaurants or any public area when visiting to check if they are up to scale on hygiene. Dreading what I may find once again, I braved a visit to the restroom room and low and behold, to my surprise, this was one of the few I have been in that I was blown away by how lovely and clean it was. This is another great valid point for La Dragons' standards inside their beautiful restaurant.

Final Say

Going to a restaurant so close to home always has a warm welcome, but nothing gave me more than a wholehearted feeling than the humble welcome and exquisite taste I got at La Dragon. Thank you to all the staff that were so lovely and management for being attentive. Once again thank you for our lovely gifted dinner and wonderful experience.
